About

Mikey

The Michael J. Szwed Legacy Fund was established in January 2008 to celebrate the life of Michael Joseph Szwed, known to most as “Mikey.” The Fund is part of the Community Foundation of Collier County.

The goal of the Fund is to provide Collier County’s youth the opportunity to excel in both academics and athletics.

Mikey was well known for his love of the game of basketball, his passion for life, and his desire and dedication for self improvement. Though basketball was his first love, he enjoyed all types of sports, and followed them all closely. This Fund will not only be sponsoring basketball players, but athletes from a variety of sports as well.

The Fund currently sponsors the Michael J. Szwed basketball team at the Naples YMCA for boys and girls ages 3-12; youth summer camp programs at the YMCA of Naples; and the annual, renewable Michael J. Szwed Athletic Scholarship at St. John Neumann High School for the students who excel at team leadership, academics, and exhibit the samequalities and ideals Mikey lived by. Beginning this 2013-14 school year, the Fund started a scholarship for an outstanding 8th grade student at St. Ann School, and we are proud to announce our first recipient is Sabrina Ficarra.

Congratulations to the 2013 scholarship recipient Colton Rose, as well as the 2011 recipients Kenny Doerseln and Jacob Roman, and the 2010 recipient Flannery Wickham, who all renewed their scholarships for the 2013-2014 school year. We would especially like to congratulate our two recent graduates of the Michael J. Szwed Athletic Scholarship at St. John Neumann High School, our 2012 scholarship recipient Katherine Sanford, and our 2009 recipient Mike Corso. Thank you to all those that have sponsored and supported the MJS Legacy Fund since it was first established in 2008; you played a huge role in assisting these students complete their high school education!

Your participation and support of our sponsors has enabled the MJS Golf Classics to raise more than $110,000, allowing us to continue our existing programs while exploring new opportunities to serve the youth of Naples and advance the goals of the Michael J. Szwed Legacy Fund. We are grateful for everyone’s continued support.
